General Impression: Home Chef is a dinner meal-kit delivery service that offers both omnivore and vegetarian plates, with farm-fresh ingredients, chef-inspired recipes, and extremely flexible subscriptions. Although I do enjoy cooking, I do not enjoy thinking up new dinner ideas. I have four kids and a husband, and my creativity is none to great these days. So, for a company to do all the planning and prepping for me, it’s nothing short of amazing and well appreciated! Not to mention, I loathe grocery shopping. More so with kids in tow. This is the main reason that I was attracted to Home Chef. Basically, a talented chef does all of the planning and prepping, a marvelous person does the packing, and I merely do the cooking. It is definitely a welcome convenience!
I did a lot of research on Blue Apron, Freshly, Marley Spoon, Plated, and Hello Fresh before deciding to give Home Chef a whirl.
Notice that my photos are very amateur iPhone photos. This is because my review is completely real. I was not paid nor did I receive a free box for this review. I paid for my box and wanted to give you a non-biased review.
A Brief Summary
You can choose from Home Chef’s weekly delivery of meat and seafood or vegetarian meals, which includes all of the ingredients and recipe cards. The recipe cards come with step-by-step cooking instructions with lively and colorful photos. The weekly subscription includes meals for either two, four, six people, or more people. Prices are dependent upon whether you choose the omnivore or vegetarian box, and of course how many servings you choose. As always, shipping is free.

How tasty were the meals? These meals were very delicious, and surprisingly there was enough food to fill us up. Home Chef employs their own chef, and he is the one that created these lovely recipes. The recipes are easy enough for a 13-year-old to follow, and they were 100% accurate. The cooking times varied, however. Usually between 30-40 minutes, which is not bad at all.
Where do they deliver? Home Chef delivers pretty much anywhere in the continental United States, excluding Hawaii and Alaska (for now).
Does this service work for single people? The minimum order for Home Chef is designed for two people. So, if you’re cooking for one, then you will have leftovers. Personally, that wouldn’t be a problem for me since I could eat leftovers for lunch the following day.
Does this service work for families? Absolutely! They do have specific family plans to choose from.
Who is this targeted for? Anyone who wants to learn how to cook, or anyone who enjoys cooking, but doesn’t like spending time digging up new recipes and then searching for the ingredients in a grocery store. Also, anyone that likes fresh vegetables and ingredients, likes the convenience and is willing to pay a small price for it. If you value your time and have some extra spending money, then this service is perfect for you.
My honest review: I received three meals from the family omnivore box last week.
All three meals came with all the necessary ingredients; however, they do not include salt, pepper, or cooking oil so you will need to have that on hand. All three came with colorful, and detailed recipe cards. They also included tips and tricks on cutting meat (very helpful).
They shipped my Home Chef box at night, and I received my box at 7 a.m. the following morning. It was waiting for me by the door upon awakening. It was like Christmas morning when I received my box. My daughters and I were uber excited to open the box and survey all of the fresh ingredients. The food was shipped in a ‘cooler box’ filled with ice packs. The food was very cold despite it being in the 98-degree weather here in Texas. The meat arrived in vacuum-sealed bags, and each meal was in its own separate packaging, which is great!
Was the packaging wasteful? Not at all! Everything in the box was recyclable (at least to my knowledge).
To conclude: My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the Home Chef meals that we received. Even more so, we absolutely loved cooking the meals as a family! Each meal kit came with fresh ingredients, and all three produced delicious, ample-sized meals. The quality was superb! All of us felt full and satisfied with each meal, and we never had to make any side dishes or side salads to fill us. It is definitely less costly than going to a restaurant by far, and only partially more costly than if I went to the grocery store to look for the specific ingredients. So, will I continue with the Home Chef service? Absolutely! I am looking forward to cooking tonight’s Home Chef meal with my daughters, and my husband is looking forward to eating it…
